Drugs / Drunkenness / Being Sober‑minded

Proverbs 20:1:
Wine
is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 23:20,21:
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe
a man with rags.

Luke 21:34:
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting
[intoxication], and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

Romans 13:13,14:
Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness
[excess], not in strife and envying.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to
fulfil the lusts thereof.

I Corinthians 9:25-27:
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they
do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
But I keep under my body, and bring
it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Galatians 5:16-23:
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are
these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness [excess],
Idolatry, witchcraft
[pharmakeia, the using of drugs, potions, or spells], hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told
you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Ephesians 5:18:
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.

I Thessalonians 5:4-8:
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as
do others; but let us watch and be sober.
For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

II Timothy 1:7:
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind
[a sober mind].

Titus 2:1-8,11,12:
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
The aged women likewise, that
they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine
shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.

I Peter 1:13:
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

I Peter 5:8,9:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Revelation 18:23:
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries
[pharmakeia] were all nations deceived.
