The Integrity of God’s Word

The Integrity of God’s Word

Anything with true integrity can be trusted and relied upon. What about God’s Word? Does it have integrity? Because God authored the Word, let’s take a quick look at what it says about God’s own integrity. As we will see, God indeed has great integrity; therefore, His Word displays that same unsurpassed integrity, and we can fully depend on it. When we understand this, it becomes easy for us to fully trust and rely on God’s Word as we live life.

We enjoy being around people who are honest and dependable. However, even the most trustworthy individual may still fall short. Not so with God. God has great integrity and He will never fall short.

Numbers 23:19:
God
is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

God does not lie. Hebrews 6:18 tells us that it is impossible for God to lie! Only truth, honesty, and purity proceed from God, for that is part of His very nature. He never tells us anything but truth and would never lead us astray. And what He speaks, He always makes good on. What He promises, He will carry out. What He says is reliable.

God gave His Word by revelation to His prophets, holy men, who recorded it for us to have today. The Scripture reflects the very integrity of God Himself as He revealed it to those holy men.

II Peter 1:20,21:
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture
[God’s Word in written form] is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake
as they were moved by the Holy Ghost [holy spirit].

God’s Son, Jesus Christ, understood the flawless integrity of the Word and relied upon it repeatedly and without hesitancy. In a prayer to his Father, Jesus expressed this deep, foundational reality, “…Thy Word is truth,” as recorded in John 17:17.

Other great spiritual men in the Bible also had a superb understanding of the veracity of God’s Word. Here in Proverbs, we find this noteworthy declaration.

Proverbs 30:5:
Every word of God
is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

A while ago, I had the opportunity to handle an ingot of silver bullion, which was about the size of a brick. On an ingot of precious metal, there is usually some indication of its integrity, its purity. For instance, some have an imprint of 999.9. This means that for every 1,000 parts of silver, there are 999.9 parts of pure silver, and only 0.1 part impurity. That’s quite impressive. God’s Word is even more impressive than that.

Psalms 12:6:
The words of the Lord
are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Each time silver is refined in a furnace, or crucible, more impurities are removed. But this verse carries even more significance when we understand the implication of the number seven. The number seven Biblically represents spiritual perfection. Therefore, the Word of God, as originally given, is spiritually perfect. It has absolutely zero impurities! However, over the course of time, translational errors have crept into the Bible, and cultural misunderstandings have made parts of it unclear or cloudy. But as we get back to the original Word as God first gave it to holy men by revelation, we can get back to the full integrity of the Word. It is absolutely perfect.

Psalms 119:140:
Thy word
is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.

When we rely upon the written Word and experience its trustworthiness for ourselves, it is something we grow to love. Since God’s Word is very pure, we certainly can delight in it. It has the integrity we can count on in any situation, giving us the confidence we need.

As we have seen, only truth and honesty come from our God; it is impossible for Him to lie. Because God has such great integrity, so does His Word. It is truth. It is pure. It is spiritually perfect. God’s Word has unsurpassed integrity, and we can FULLY depend on it in all categories of life!
